Zire 71 - Reliability + 1  |
Ive had my Zire 71 for a few weeks now and can honestly say this is the perfect pda for me :) Size wise, its small enough to fit well in your pocket, but not too small that it is unusable, it sits well in your hand. The screen is the clearest Ive ever seen so far on palm or pocket pc units. The software included is the usual fare, and a few extras including realplayer for mp3 playback (from the SD card). Apps on the whole are very stable, battery life is excellent.The only downsides were :
The cradle that comes with it could have been better quality, it doesnt feel solid when you insert the unit.
There is no built-in wireless/bluetooth. If your used to Palm apps in general you will love this pda, its nippy and perfectly formed.

Zire 71 - A great PDA  |
Ive owned a few PDAs before, most recently an m515. I like the Palm OS, but the 515 was a bit slow. The Zire 71 is perfect for me. it feels nice to hold, slightly chunky but smooth, also the screen is brilliant, by far the best Ive used. Real Player works with no fuss, and MP3 files are easy to transfer, using the "no HotSync" software. The built in camera is surprisingly good quality for a fixed focus, low pixel rated affair with no flash, its easily good enough for e-mailing and can be blown up to desktop size, whilst still retaining some clarity. Applications run much faster and it scans the SD card much quicker as well, which was a gripe with the 515. Battery life seems good too, despite heavy usage.I have a couple of niggles, firstly Documents to Go isnt included, which I feel is an important bit of software. I know this model isnt aimed at business use, but you can hardly have 2 PDAs on the go! Headphones arent included either, but maybe this is a good thing as it allows you to get a decent set, rather than the rubbish ones often supplied. Overall, this is the best handheld Ive used bar none. Any lingering reasons for buying a Pocket PC are finally laid to rest with the Zire 71.

The Palm Zire 71 is a PDA with a sense of fun. Of course, itll do all of the addresses, diary entries and tasks that make PDAs such a useful business tool. But while many PDAs stop there, the Zire 71 has plenty of other excellent features. Its main selling point for me is the integral digital camera, which can be accessed by sliding up the front of the PDA. It produces pictures which are better quality than a camera-phone but not as sharp as a dedicated digital camera - theyre ideal for the web or for my blog, though. The display is sharp, with excellent colour. With an expansion card added the Zire can handle music and multimedia. It comes with Palms VersaMail, which when connected to a compatible mobile phone via an infra-red link allows you to collect email - dialling up may be slightly more expensive than a WAP bundle, but I prefer writing emails on the Zire to writing them on my phone. And to cap it all it looks great. A very classy performer.
